Sorry to say, our nation has a long history of neglecting those who serve in our military.
From the days of the American Revolution, when Congress neglected to pay veterans, finally deciding instead to grant them American Indian land in Ohio as payment for service during the war; to post World War I, when Pres. Herbert Hoover ordered Gen Douglas MacArthur to ride-down thousands of “Bonus Army” veterans, along with their wives and children, who were camped in a “Hooverville” on the Anacostia Flats. The U.S. Army attacked the Vets, killed two, beat others, destroyed the Vets’ shelters and burned their belongings. (1.)
Today, the military does not beat most Vets when they ask for just compensation. Instead, the people making the decisions, just assign the Vets to the legions of the “disappeared”… no longer visible… and no longer due benefits.
It’s just another disconnect - one more way we have disconnected our heart from our society.

1. Many of the war veterans had been out of work since the beginning of the Great Depression. The World War Adjusted Compensation Act of 1924 had awarded them bonuses in the form of certificates they could not redeem until 1945. Each service certificate, issued to a qualified veteran soldier, bore a face value equal to the soldier's promised payment plus compound interest.
