One day a long, long time ago, the angels sang about the
birth of Christ, Peace on Earth and Good Will to Men.
Luke 2
13. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the
heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good
will toward men.
Little did men know then and little do we know today the incalculable cost of war paid with the millions of lives lost, many, many more maimed in body and spirit and heartbreaking treasure squandered.
There is no doubt that our lives would be different today if we could have somehow managed to honor what the angels sang that day; Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

* US nuclear tests killed far more civilians than we knew, Tim Fernholz, quartz.com, 21 Dec 2017.
"When the US entered the nuclear age, it did so recklessly. New research suggests that the hidden cost of developing nuclear weapons were far larger than previous estimates, with radioactive fallout responsible for 340,000 to 690,000 American deaths from 1951 to 1973." more
