Worthy of Our Heritage

While reading Dr. Kaye’s book, The Fight for the Four Freedoms: What Made FDR and the Greatest Generation Truly Great, my mind kept going back to conversations I had with my father. Enlisting after Pearl Harbor, he served in Patton’s Third Army, 80th Infantry Div. Somehow he survived continuous battle from the post D-Day landing at Omaha Beach through the relief of 101st at Bastogne, during the Battle of the Bulge, and then on into Germany. With frostbitten feet, severe loss of hearing and finally wounded by enemy mortar fire, he came home in 1945 to recuperate at a Colorado VA hospital. Along with millions of other GIs he was happy to be alive and to begin living his life. And, like countless other GIs, a tiny bit of recognition for his selfless acts of combat bravery came in the 1990s when his decorations finally arrived at his home in Akron, OH.

In every page of Dr. Kaye’s book I saw the faces of my father and my mother, a hero, too, who contracted TB while in nurses’ training during the war. As young people and later in life, they actually believe in and lived the Four Freedoms each day. They put their faith in President Roosevelt and trusted him because of what he did. He got it done and never gave up. Just like them.

Dr. Kaye has done much more than masterfully paint the FDR and Four Freedoms stories. He has given us a gift: to see the faces of our parents one more time and revisit what made them the great, matchless people they were. Further, he has challenged us all to live up to, and become worthy of, our heritage - hopefully, some day soon.

Four Freedoms Metastasized

During his State of the Union address, 6 Jan 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt discussed four fundamental freedoms that people "everywhere in the world" should share:
  •  Freedom of speech
  •  Freedom of worship
  •  Freedom from want
  •  Freedom from fear
The U.S. must have been a different place back in 1941, because these words of freedom helped to inspire the “Greatest Generation” to soldier-through the years of misery which soon engulfed the nation.

Only a few months after his speech, the U.S. entered WWII and today's world was born of the chaos, destruction and loss of millions of lives that soon followed.

Democracy seemed to work then. But, in 2014, our democracy is not the same as our parents'. There is no doubt that our government is working for the very wealthy. But, it is not working for me and most likely it’s the same for you, too.

Our four freedoms have metastasized into the exact opposite of our parents’.

For instance, how can one profess freedom from fear when the U.S. military, federal agents of all types and the local police department SWAT team can bash in your door, toss in a “flash bang” and, if you survive the encounter, throw you into jail — all without a warrant. (1.)

Or, if every email, tweet or Facebook posting you write ends up in the hands of the FBI or Homeland Security and you can be thrown into jail at anytime, held indefinitely, at their discretion — all without a warrant. (2.)

“Free from want” has turned into a Frankenstein monster. Not only have Americans been turned into a nation of sugar addicts [On average, Americans annually consume, 45.5 lbs of sugar and four gallons of high fructose corn syrup loaded junk food. (3.)] by our government in order to fatten corporate coffers, we are now guinea pigs, subject to an endless stream of genetically engineered food products. It’s sadly mind-boggling to know that not one governmental agency has conducted research as to the long-term effects of genetically engineered food products on humans. What does that portend for us?

Consider Monsanto’s “Roundup Ready” crops which are engineered to be herbicide-tolerant. They now account for about 75 percent of all the corn and cotton grown in the U.S. and 90 percent of soybeans.

What’s important about that? According to Michael Pollan, award winning journalist, food and food industry expert (Pollan is also professor of journalism at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism and the director of the Knight Program in Science and Environmental Journalism. He is the author of many books, four New York Times bestsellers and hundreds of articles, and a contributing writer to The New York Times Magazine) — “Roundup Ready” genetically engineered corn does not increase crop yields, but it sure does produce herbicide-resistant weeds, prompting farmers to use more and stronger herbicide sprays. And, that causes a slew of “collateral” damage to adjacent crops, wildlife and ultimately humans, too. (4.) (Please see, "What is this STUFF? Agent Orange is Roundup Ready" below.)

Since Monsanto forbids family farmers from saving Roundup Ready seed corn for next-season planting, farmers are locked into a never ending cycle which not only ensures fat profits for Monsanto but guarantees that we have no choice but to eat Frankenstein-corn. World-wide, for farmers and consumers, “forbidden to save seeds” means it’s become more difficult for people to feed themselves.

Some see "Freedom of worship" as a foundation of America. However, American freedom of religion actually translates into: It’s O.K. for you to practice your religion as long as it’s similar to mine — in my eyes. If, for instance, you wear a turban, a veil, some form of garb or dress, display facial hair or the hair on your head in an unusual way — then you may stimulate a visit form the current version of the KKK — the FBI, the IRS, the CIA, or some mentally disturbed person who sees your difference as proof that Satan lives within you. Even worse, perhaps if you actually believe in walking Christ’s path, well, then, that really makes you the ultimate threat to the establishment.

In The Fight for the Four Freedoms What Made FDR and the Greatest Generation Truly Great, historian Harvey J. Kaye, has correctly concluded that today Americans need to take personal responsibility to right the injustices which are now metastasized throughout our society. But throughout his book Prof. Kaye also makes another important point: it was President Franklin D. Roosevelt who made the wheels of government work for all Americans and not against them.

FDR not only faced the Republican obstructionists and regressives of his day, he out foxed and overcame them. And rather than surrendering before the battle began, he went to the American people with new ideas, plus — and most importantly — the means and the courage to achieve them. FDR became the leader we needed when we needed him.

Compared to our leader, President Obama, there is no comparison (save for the usual Republican obstructionists to obsess upon). FDR actually did what he said he would do while our leader, President Obama, has failed us when we needed him most.

Perhaps in learning that we have lost our four freedoms we also have discovered another inconvenient truth. Barack Obama is no Franklin Roosevelt.

What is this STUFF? Agent Orange is Roundup Ready

From the Center for Food Safety January 2014 Fact Sheet, “Agent Orange” Crops: The Next Stage in the Chemical Arms Race”: AGENT ORANGE: CHEMICAL WARFARE IN THE VIETNAM WAR

The first planned use of 2,4-D—to destroy Japanese rice fields in WWII—was preempted by the end of the war. Like many wartime biocides, 2,4-D was “repurposed” for domestic use — the war on weeds — only to realize its original mission two decades later in Vietnam. In what has been called the “largest chemical warfare operation in history,” the U.S. military dumped 11 million gallons of Agent Orange (a mixture of 2,4-D and the even more toxic 2,4,5T) over Vietnam from 1962-1971. The purposes of this chemical warfare were to destroy rice fields and rainforests to deny the Vietnamese food and cover. The Veterans Administration regards Agent Orange exposure as the cause of numerous diseases in Vietnam veterans: diabetes, neuropathy, Parkinson’s disease, heart disease, liver dysfunction, chloracne, numerous cancers, as well as birth defects in the children of exposed soldiers. According to one estimate, at least 3 million Vietnamese suffer serious health problems from Agent Orange exposure, including birth defects in children and grandchildren of those exposed. (5.)

Walk His Path

"A new religious statue in the town of Davidson, N.C., is unlike anything you might see in church."
"The statue depicts Jesus as a vagrant sleeping on a park bench. St. Alban's Episcopal Church installed the homeless Jesus statue on its property in the middle of an upscale neighborhood filled with well-kept townhomes."
"Jesus is huddled under a blanket with his face and hands obscured; only the crucifixion wounds on his uncovered feet give him away."
"The reaction was immediate. Some loved it; some didn't."

Medical Mistakes 3rd Leading Cause of Death in U.S.A.

How Many Die From Medical Mistakes in U.S. Hospitals?
by Marshall Allen, ProPublica, 19 Sept 2013

A recent study published by the Journal of Patient Safety says the number of deaths resulting from medical mistakes in U.S. hospitals may be between 210,000 and 440,000 patients each year.

“That would make medical errors the third-leading cause of death in America, behind heart disease, which is the first, and cancer, which is second.”
Go here for the rest of the story...

One wonders, what happens to this comparison if the "medical mistakes" category were expanded to include "nursing homes" and other extended care institutions? I will bet that the "medical mistakes" category will move up on the list of leading causes of death in the U.S.

"Cause I'm A Man!"

Detroiter Lance Swain, in vehicle, helps lift an elderly woman out of an overturned Jeep to other good Samaritans who stopped to help two women after an accident on southbound Lodge near the Howard exit in Detroit, Michigan on Tuesday, March 25, 2014. (Daniel Mears / The Detroit News)
I saw another for real Detroit miracle the other day. It was reported in the established media, too!

This photo story appeared in The Detroit News. It shows four black men and a black woman helping a white woman out of an overturned Jeep on the Lodge Freeway. Another photo shows the the back woman and another black lady helping the elderly white women to their car to stay warm until police and firemen arrived on the scene of the accident.

In my mind these “good Samaritan” Detroit men and women exemplified one of Detroiters' least recognized attributes - they really care about one another. Not only did these heroes risk their lives to help these ladies, they did so regardless of race. That alone, in photographic proof, is a shocking fact for many suburban Metro Detroit people.

Detroit News Reporter Daniel Mears asked one of the good Samaritans, Mr. Lance Swain, why he helped the two strangers. “Swain answered, shocked by the question, ‘Cause I'm a man!’”

Predatory Capitalism in a Can

Change the name from Panama to Downriver Michigan, or any other region in the USA, and the story is the same. Soda kills. Stop drinking it and giving what little money you have to the corporations which are killing you and your loved ones.

The people of Panama and the people of Downriver MI have more in common with each other than with the Coke and Pepsi executives. We just want to live life with our loved ones and not as profit centers of the diabetes-linked soda industry. (1) Please go here for more about the dangers of sugar in your diet.

1. "One Soda Per Day Raises Diabetes Risk, Study Suggests"
ABC News
By Liz Neporent, 25 Apr 2013

Here’s yet another reason for giving up soda: A new study out today suggests that just one 12 ounce serving of a sugar-sweetened beverage can raise the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by up to 22 percent.

Since most research on the evils of soda has looked at North American populations, researchers at the Imperial College of London wanted to see if they could establish a link between sugary drink consumption and type 2 diabetes in Europeans too.

To test their theory, the researchers combed through over 15 years of data on sugar-sweetened beverage consumption that included more than 27,000 people from seven European countries. During that time period more than 40 percent developed type 2 diabetes, with those who said they drank at least one soda or some other sweet drink each day showing an 18 percent higher risk of developing the disease. When factors like body weight and body mass index weren’t controlled for, the risk rose to 22 percent.

This is consistent with findings from U.S. studies that find that soda drinking is associated with a 25 percent increased diabetes risk.

Notably, even diet soda drinkers had to worry about developing diabetes. However, when body weight and exercise levels were factored in, the link disappeared. In other words, healthy-weight, exercising diet soda drinkers were no more likely to develop type two diabetes than non-soda drinkers.

Why is sipping just one small can of soda daily so damaging to health? Sweetened drinks are the largest contributor of empty calories and processed sugar in both the American and European diet according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest. It’s been pegged as a major contributor to a variety of health issues.

“Aside from sugar, there are nine other potentially dangerous ingredients in soda, including carcinogenic artificial colors and phosphoric acid, which can contribute to everything from obesity to cancer to the depletion of micronutrients essential for strong bones,” noted Jayson Calton, co-author of Rich Food, Poor Food, a book that explains the hidden dangers in food and beverages.

The British study is not without issues. Each country’s study center analyzed their data a little differently which might have introduced errors. It’s also what scientists call an association study, meaning the information is culled from self-reported drinking patterns – a technique that always chances inaccuracies.

However, it does seem to reinforce the clear message that sugary drinks have an unhealthy effect, not only on the waistline, but on overall health.
